Our story

The Beacon Hill Village started in Boston in 1999. This initial village spurred a national movement revolving around the village concept and aging in place. This attention led to a New York Times article in 2006, an article that Barbara Lando read. She liked the idea of volunteer help and having a good list of plumbers. So, Barbara and a group of friends met at her house where they brainstormed and scheduled a session at our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). The session was to see if there was larger interest within the community...and there was!

The initial OLLI session garnered enough donations to enable us to join the Village-to-Village Network as an "interested in starting" member. It also helped us foster important relationships within our community. Darlene Supplee, the Executive Director of our local Senior Center, offered us office space and fiscal sponsorship even without previously knowing many of our founding members. All these events set in motion what would become Aging at Home Fairbanks.

Our kick-off event on November 15th, 2015.
